Clinical Observation on Impotence Following Urethral Injury

Abstract
26 patients with urethral injury treated during the period from January 1967 to May 1970 have been studied in particular reference to sexual ability following injury and the results are summarized as follows: 1. The incidence of urethral injury was 7.07% of the total inpatients and the average in age was 23 years, 17 cases (65.3%) were accompanied by pelvic fractures. 2. The incidence of impotence following injury was 38.44%, 26.92% temporary and 11.53% permanent. 3. Of 7 cases of temporary impotence, urethral injury was accompanied by pelvic fracture in 6 cases and all three cases of permanent impotence followed urethral injury accompanied by pelvic fracture. 4. Of 7 cases of temporary impotence, previous urethral injury was complete in 3 and incomplete in 4. Three cases of permanent impotence followed in 3 cases of complete urethral injury. 5. The average interval between the reception of trauma and the recognition of impotence was 6 months.
